Michael Cooper may appear as a typical productive high school junior. He is a three-sport varsity athlete participating in soccer, tennis and track, an honor roll student, ranks number one in his class for the past three years, and very active member of his community. Michael is also the middle of three children in the Cooper family. His older and younger brothers have Autism and he spends a lot of his free time helping them through everyday activities. High School Soccer

As a junior, Michael is a three year varsity player for the Highland
Regional High School soccer team. He started as an outside fullback for
his first two years and as a junior was the starting stopper and center
midfielder for the team. He is frequently moved
all over the field by the coach as other players are substituted out.
Michael typically plays the entire game. At the end of year banquet,
the coach explained to the audience that Michael was like Bugs Bunny in

Michael is a very accomplished student athlete. Academically, he has been ranked #1 in his class for all 3 years in high school and he has been selected as a member of the National Honor Society. He is a 3 year varsity player on his high school soccer team and a 6 time captain of his club soccer team. The Highland Soccer Stars is a soccer/exercise program that works with players on the autism/PDD-NOS spectrum. Most of the kids have never done situps or any other kind of exercise prior to joining the program. Michael (in yellow) works with the younger group of kids, ages 5-8, to improve their confidence and increase their flexibility and stamina.

Working with the students in the Soccer Stars program, Michael helps them to deal with motor planning challenges. Exercises, such as mountain climbers, shown here, are particularly difficult. Michael has to make it fun and make sure that everyone participates to the best of their ability.
